About Kevin
Kevin S. Smith is a business owner, media producer and radio host of Kevin Smith Reports, a three-hour weekend radio program.
He shares his views on a variety of topics, including government & politics, economic development, taxation & fiscal policy, education, quality of life, international business, and global news events concerning Hoosiers.
Mayor of a Midwestern City
As mayor of Anderson, Indiana from 2004 to 2007, Smith implemented an ambitious plan to rebuild the city after a major automobile manufacturer shut down operations, which led to massive layoffs. Smith’s many efforts included attracting new business from outside investors; major infrastructure upgrades and expansion; frugal fiscal spending; and an aggressive economic development sales effort. One sure way for a project to receive Mayor Smith’s support was to prove its worth to the future of the city.
His efforts as mayor landed Anderson on Forbes magazine’s 2007 list of Top 100 Best Small Places for Business. Shortly after, the Indiana Chamber of Commerce named Anderson as its 2007 Community of the Year.
Smith lost a bid for reelection in 2007, led in part by a nationwide anti-incumbent sentiment with far-reaching state and local impact. Four years later, in a rematch for the city’s top job, Kevin won reelection for mayor of Anderson.
County Council President
Before serving as mayor, he served on the Madison County (Indiana) Council for 10 years, leading twice as its president and once as its vice president.
Police Detective
After his first term as mayor, Smith returned to the Anderson (Indiana) Police Department to complete a 29-year career as a detective.
Chamber of Commerce
Kevin briefly led the Clinton County Chamber of Commerce as its CEO and director of economic development before returning to his lifelong hometown of Anderson.
Radio Host
Since 2000, Smith began his eponymous radio show, Kevin Smith Reports, sharing his fundamental belief that a community can expand its tax base through job creation, while holding the line on spending.
Currently
Kevin resides in Anderson with his wife of 30+ years, Anita, and their three children.
